The second edition Of Inkblot Women in Film hosted by Zulumoke Oyibo saw a number of prominent women in the film industry. in attendance. They were Beverly Naya (Actress) , Yolanda Okereke (Costume designer) , Folu Storms (Actress, Host), Omawumi Ogbe (PR Strategist) , Joy Olos (Data Analyst) , Amaka Akukwe (Event planner, Redbox), Zulumoke Oyibo (Co-founder, Inkblot Productions) and Mimi Bartels (Producer, FilmOne).
The ladies over lunch discussed varying topics ranging from politics in the film industry, to the segregation of women on board of companies, the need for actors to promote films they feature in and the importance for documentation of data gathered during the production and release of films.
”Women in our industry today face challenges just for being women and are not given enough accolades for their work. We need to be seen more and hyped as women in the industry”. Zulu says
The objective of the IWIF is to tackle social, ethical and professional issues surrounding women in the film industry while creating a working environment that is safe and free.
Subsequent editions are set to hold in the coming months and aims towards bringing more women into the film industry together.
Film lovers- look no further, we just dropped our first film “The Department” on our YouTube channel as a Valentine’s Day gift to you.
First released in 2015 in collaboration with Closer Pictures, The Department tells the story of a secret department in a business conglomerate specialized in blackmailing top executives into selling their companies to their leader (Jide Kosoko). Two lovers (Majid Michel and Osas Ighodaro) however opt out of the organization, but the group wants her back for one last job. She accepts against her husband’s will, who consequently decides to sabotage the Department in order to save their marriage.
We often wish for a better world, forgetting that change starts with us. With this in mind, co-founder of Inkblot Productions and prolific film and television Producer; Zulumoke Oyibo has kickstarted a change making initiative which aims to foster women led growth in the Nigerian film and television industry.
Tagged “Inkblot Women In Film (IWIF)”, Oyibo aims to create a safe space where like-minded colleagues can discuss and further the increased inclusion of women in Nollywood, especially in positions of authority and decision making.
The first event in the monthly series had in attendance actors Erica Nlewedim, Sharon Ooja, Linda Ejiofor and Ini Dima-Okojie alongside Zulumoke Oyibo, Filmmaker Judith Audu, Public Relations Expert Nike Fagbule, Maverick Entertainment lawyer Oyinkan Fawehimi and Amaka Akukwe, a leading name in the event planning sector.
At lunch, this diverse group of attendees discussed a variety of issues women face working in Nollywood. Drawing from personal experience, they highlighted areas to implement immediate and long term change.
When asked why IWIF and why now? Zulumoke Oyibo says “It is my conviction that no industry building can be achieved without community, and what better group of powerful, creative, efficient people are there than a group of working women! The IWIF objective is to tackle social, ethical and professional issues surrounding women while creating a work environment that is safe and free”.
“My hope is that through this IWIF community, we can work together towards portraying the African woman in her fullness of femininity and power while structuring the film industry for the good of all.” Oyibo concludes.
We’re very excited to see these powerful women effect change, so be sure to look out for subsequent IWIF updates!
Madame (Tina Mba) – The Set Up
Madame’s first scene on The Set Up screams badass!
It is absolutely iconic and one of our favourite scene from The Set up. For the rest of the film she is intense and manipulative
Hauwa (Funke Akindele- Bello)- Who’s The Boss
Hauwa is terrifying, confident and mean. From her introduction on the screen, this is clear. Every time she curses Liah, we feel a chill. Even after Liah takes her by surprise, she uses every means within her reach to get her back into the company
Ozzy (Nse Ikpe- Etim) – Quam’s Money
Ozzy is one of the most terrifying Inkblot characters and was beautifully portrayed in the first 15 minutes of Quam’s Money. There is a soft approach to Ozzy at the end of Quam’s Money but can it make up for the previous hours she tortured Quam
Funlayo Johnson (Iretiola Doyle)- The Arbitration
Super talented actor Iretiola Doyle plays the iconic role of Funlayo Johnson. She is in control. Her speeches are calculated and perfectly cold.
Eme + Emeka (Toni Tones and Williams Uchemba)- Quam’s Money
Eme changes a lot during the course of the film, but right from the beginning, she is unpredictable, smooth and in control. Emeka on the other hand seemed helpless, but after his first reveal as a villain, he is consistent, cruel and commanding.
